chattels: BERLIN, Germany – The German military on Thursday confirmed a possible chemical weapons attack on Kurdish Peshmerga soldiers fighting the Islamic State group (ISIS).
The autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in northern Iraq had asked for international help to determine whether chemical weapons had been used in an attack late Tuesday on the Peshmerga on the Makhmur front, some 35 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Erbil. There was a “possible chemical weapons attack on the Kurdish frontlines at sector six,” the German defense ministry said.

The United States condemns in the strongest terms both the ISIL attack this morning at a crowded market place in Baghdad, and the car bomb attacks in Diyala Province on Monday, as well as other recent terrorist attacks against the Iraqi people,” said State Department Spokesman John Kirby in a Statement.
Kirby added: “The United States continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Iraqi people as they confront ISIL and the violence it represents.”
ISIS claimed responsibility for today’s attack on Baghdad’s Sadr city where at least 70 people were killed and two blasts in Diyala province earlier in the week that claimed the lives of around 60 people. Kirby said that ISIS is losing territory and that these terror attacks are a tactic “to sow discord among the Iraqi people,”

Speaking Tuesday at the Ronald Reagan Library in California, he said: “In Iraq’s Kurdish region we have loyal friends, and brave and skilled fighters.” For a year, Kurdistan’s Peshmerga forces have been the only effective boots on the ground in the fight against the Islamic State group (ISIS).
The US-led coalition has been providing air support to the Peshmerga, but Washington has refused repeated Kurdish pleas to arm them directly. While allies like Germany have been providing arms directly, the United States has insisted on supplies going through a shaky and graft-laced government in Baghdad.

chattels: PENTAGON -- General Raymond Odierno said Wednesday that the partition of Iraq into separate administrative regions “might be the only solution” to the country’s crisis, although the outgoing US Army Chief of Staff was careful to soften his position.
“I think its [reconciliation] is becoming more difficult by the day and I think there might be some alternative solutions that might come sometime in the future, where Iraq might not look like what it did in past,” said Odierno, the US Army’s 38th Chief of Staff, at his last press conference at the Pentagon.
“[Partition] is something that could happen and might be the only solution, but I am not ready to say that,” he said. Odierno will be replaced Friday by General Mark Milley, concluding a 39-year career in the US military.
The general said the United States has trained 16,000 Iraqis, including Sunnis and Kurds, as a part of coalition efforts to enable local forces to take on the Islamic State (ISIS). “As of this morning when I was briefed, about 16,000 [Iraqi forces] have been trained by US forces in Iraq since the beginning of the year,” said Odierno.
