Donnie: Oil soars over 10 percent, biggest gain in six years as shorts scramble

Doug_W: as shorts scramble ???

Donnie: NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil rocketed more than 10 percent higher on Thursday, posting its biggest one-day rally in over six years as recovering equity markets and news of diminished crude supplies set off a short-covering scramble by bearish traders.

Snapping back from a deep two-month slump that knocked U.S. crude to 6-1/2 year lows below $40 this week, oil climbed as world stock markets rose on hopes Chinese government measures to stimulate the economy would pay off, while the dollar strengthened as risk aversion eased.

The rally was aided by news of a force majeure on Nigerian oil exports declared by Shell (RDSa.L) and private data indicating more drawdowns in crude this week at Cushing, Oklahoma, traders said.

A big upward revision in second quarter U.S. economic growth helped. Front month Brent crude (LCOc1) for October more than reversed a week's worth of losses, rising $4.42 to settle at $47.56 a barrel, marking a 10.25 percent rise.

Gains accelerated toward the close, locking in the biggest one-day jump since late 2008, when prices were bouncing back after the financial crisis.

The contract traded on Monday at a March 2009 low of $42.23. http://ift.tt/1RmGhYu...

Doug_W: set off a short-covering scramble by bearish traders. ???

Doug_W: laymans terms plz

Donnie: selling short means to sell a stock you don't own

MichelleL: bears bet on things going down, Doug

 Doug_W: glad I asked  lol

Doug_W: ty 4 trying

Donnie: then after the stock drops buy it cheaper and give it back to cover what you borrowed

MichelleL: lol

Doug_W: ummm how can U sell waht U don't own?

Donnie: no guarantee you can buy it cheaper

Doug_W: never mind I think I m happier being oblivious

Donnie: ‹@Doug_W› borrow it

MichelleL: with care I hope doug

MichelleL: thats why all these people go broke during margin calls

Doug_W: that is WAYYYYY above my pay grade

Doug_W: margin call

Doug_W: UGG

MichelleL: margin is borrowing money

MichelleL: when there is a margin call, its a demand to "pay up"

Doug_W: who in thier right mind borrows $$ to gamble on a stockl

Doug_W: OMG

Donnie: actually it's pretty simple and can be very profitable in a short number of days - in a "normal" market

Donnie: not in a market that is propped up by the gov't

MichelleL: lol Doug

Doug_W: thinkj I will go watch BONES I under stand that geek talk

Doug_W: lol

MichelleL: lol

MichelleL: some people don't like even talking margin donnie lol

MichelleL: what i dont get is how all these peeps got so over their heads with "reserves"
Donnie: it was too easy to get them and the pitch

Donnie: control million of Dinar that will be worth millions times 3 for just a couple hundred dollars

Donnie: same as options

MichelleL: ‹@Donnie› some people were really angry at me when I told them to buy and forget the reserves, while they were losing their shirts each month

Donnie: options (calls and puts) let you control a large number of a stock for a little down payment

MichelleL: i know Donnie, but better to own 100k than buy a reserve for a mil and own nuthin

MichelleL: i'm talking deeeenars, not options which are different and make some sense

Donnie: like i said - same as options on a stock - options and reserves both expire worthless

MichelleL: yup

Donnie: i played more with options then ever owning a stock

Donnie: i used to buy calls and puts on the S&P100 oex index

MichelleL: i own stocks, would play with options on very small scale when i'm done gambling on real long shots like deeeenars

MichelleL: then again, i'd just as soon go to vegas when i'm rich lol

Donnie: to me - stocks are for investing and options are for playing

MichelleL: learn how to shoot me some craps

Donnie: now ur talking

MichelleL: i hold my stocks for a very long time Donnie - sooner or later they too must be turned over

Donnie: forget the "manipulated" stock market - go to a casino for instant gratification

MichelleL: will do when i can afford to again - unless i'd prefer a massage and facial, at least i feel better after spending a few hundred dollars that way ;)

Donnie: i can't wait to be able to get a massage every month!!!

MichelleL: lol i'm going to want 2 a week

Donnie: that will hurt you

MichelleL: nope, no way

MichelleL: been there Donnie, doesn't hurt at all, helps a whole bunch

MichelleL: unfortunately who can afford it and who the heck was I when i did??? lol

Donnie: i get deep tissue massages - one of those a month is good - then maybe add a "fluffy" relaxing massage with hot stones for the second massage in the same month :)

MichelleL: i used to do cellulite massages every week, hot stones for the fun of it every week etc

MichelleL: as for deep tissue, Donnie, can take certain areas deeply, and they need the work, others not so much
