Donnie: NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Chinese stocks led Asian markets sharply lower Monday as investors braced for further declines in U.S. stocks. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index plunged nearly 2% in Monday trading there.
The Shanghai Composite Index opened down 3.83% before declining even further. The Chinese government, hoping to stem further selling, decided Sunday to allow pension funds managed by local governments to invest in stocks for first time.
These funds could pump as much as $97 billion into the market, China's media said, according to a Reuters report. Last week's selloff in the U.S. pushed most of the major averages down at least 10% from their recent highs, putting them into correction territory. The market's main gauge, the S&P 500, is down 7.5% since its May high.
TheStreet's Jim Cramer said in Real Money columns published Friday and Sunday that the bigger-than-expected selloff was due to heightened fears about the Federal Reserve raising interest rates.
