Hedge Funds May Lose 25% of Assets, Blackstone’s James Says

The $2.9 trillion hedge-fund industry may lose about a quarter of its assets in the next year as performance slumps, said Tony James, Blackstone Group LP’s billionaire president.
“It’s kind of a day of reckoning that we face here,” James said Wednesday in an interview with Bloomberg TV Canada’s Pamela Ritchie at a conference in Toronto. “There will be a shrinkage in the industry and it will be painful. That’s going to be pretty painful for an awful lot of places.”

The hedge-fund industry is having its worst start to a year in performance and investor withdrawals since global markets reeled after the financial crisis. Third Point, the hedge-fund firm founded by Dan Loeb, last month said the industry is in the first stage of a “washout” after “catastrophic” results this year
.
Hedge funds have lost 1.8 percent this year, according to Hedge Fund Research’s global index, the poorest performance since 2008. The industry had net outflows of $16.6 billion in the past two quarters, the most since 2009, according to HFR. In 2015, 979 funds closed, more than any year since 2009, according to the research firm.

Thunderhawk:  China, US to Coordinate Monetary Policy in the Wake of Renminbi Devaluation

As a hike in the Fed fund rates is looming, and Chinese authorities intend to negotiate favourable conditions for the country's transition from an international trade-based model toward other sources of growth, as the expected appreciation of global reserve currencies is seen as a potentially disruptive factor for global trade.

Mainland China’s monetary authorities are hoping to coordinate policy efforts with the US Federal Reserve, as expectations regarding the Fed interest rate and the latest devaluation in the effective renminbi FX rate have rocked the markets, a development both sides would like to avoid in the future

Annual negotiations will commence in June, Chinese officials said, with Beijing interested in determining whether a June or July Fed fund rates hike should be expected. Meanwhile, the US Department of the Treasury put the Chinese renminbi on their new currency watchlist as potentially hazardous to market stability, given the unpredictable FX rate fluctuations.

Thunderhawk:  Currency Spotlight: Yen’s Rise May Signal Upcoming Trade Disruptions

As the yen appreciated without any preventive action by the authorities, Tokyo is likely to have concluded the negative consequences of the yen rally for Japan’s international trade are smaller than gains in form of capital inflows and strengthening domestic consumer confidence.

The Japanese yen, having substantially advanced against the dollar in the past several months, remains on the ascending trend as emerging market volatility and Brexit risks triggered investors to rush for safe haven assets, whilst the improvements in the Japanese economy boosted by fiscal stimulus, bucked the trend.

Ahead of the Shinzo Abe cabinet’s decision on raising sales tax, and amidst the US Federal Reserve’s fund rate hike anticipation, the Japanese currency has become a major disruptive factor to international trade as well, given that Japanese imports slumped despite a very favourable situation in April, a potential threat to mainland China’s trade.

As the yen soars, and the dollar and British pound are poised for gains, the appreciation of the entire basket of reserve currencies might detach emerging markets from advanced economies
