chattels: ERBIL, Kurdistan – Ten-year-old Khalid Mohammad studies his family members intently before strapping a fanny pack to his tiny waist and joining them in the street. He wasn’t headed to school. It was his first day on the job. Mohammad is one of 700,000 children who, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), missed the entire 2014-215 school year.

The organization estimates that 3 million children will be out of school this year. Mohammad and his family are refugees from Mosul, the stronghold of the so-called Islamic State, or ISIS, that has been occupied by the terror group since last year.
~~~
They are part of the nearly 2 million displaced people who have arrived in the Kurdistan region since ISIS began its onslaught more than a year ago. The influx has exacerbated economic and political woes in the region, stretching already thin public services past capacity. For refugees like Mohammad, school is a luxury he can hardly afford.
chattels: “In Iraq, up to 1.5 million kids have difficulty accessing education services consistently. If they miss out on one or two years of education, this decreases the chance they will ever go back to school,” said Jeffrey Bates, chief of communications for UNICEF in Iraq.
chattels: “The scale of the crisis, the way in which it expands and changes every day is daunting, but we are optimistic we can work for a brighter future for children in Iraq,” Elkorany said.
 chattels: It is the imposition of reality upon rhetoric, IMO. There were constitutional limitations and necessary enabling legislation from the outset to accomplish the reforms. Many knowledegable commentators said as much. It is the dinar pundits who appropriated the reforms as the next / newest basis to sensationalize the prospects of the IQD.
chattels: Recent example is the opening of the green zone. It is mostly show and little substance. Many / most of the security limitations remain in effect.
chattels: Why would the US pick Turkey over the Kurds? By Paul Davis Kurdish Peshmerga at a graduation ceremony in Erbil, April 2015 Photo: AFP Kurdish Peshmerga at a graduation ceremony in Erbil, April 2015 Photo: AFP There is an increasing distance between US interest and that of Turkey as well as between the EU and Turkey.
Once the stalwart of NATO’s eastern defense the breakup of the Soviet Union and the subsequent removal of the Warsaw Pact nations as a threat, in fact many becoming NATO members, reduced the strategic leverage Turkey offered.
The current ruling party in Turkey, the Justice and Development Party (AKP) has been moving Turkey farther from its pro-western secular founding principles and closer to a single party dictatorship. The AKP has not however been able to totally subordinate the democratic system and there has been sufficient push back to hold somewhat to the rule of law and maintain an opposition, however tenuous those positons may be.
