Donnie: Reports: Qatar appoints first ambassador to Iraq in 25 years

Donnie: Nearly a quarter century after closing its embassy in Iraq, Qatar has appointed an ambassador to Iraq, signaling an improvement in relations between the two countries, agencies and Al Jazeera said yesterday.

According to the state-funded news network, Zayed al-Khayareen has been appointed by Qatar’s Emir as the “ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Iraq.” The decision comes on the heels of a controversial conference that Doha hosted to discuss political issues in Iraq. http://ift.tt/1V3i0bM...

Donnie: Egypt court ratifies 'IS' death sentences

Donnie: Cairo (AFP) - A court in Egypt on Saturday ratified death sentences for 12 people convicted of planning attacks on behalf of the jihadist Islamic State group. Six of those whose sentences were confirmed are in custody, while six were tried in absentia. All were convicted of having joined IS -- which has declared a "caliphate" in parts of Iraq and Syria under its control -- and of plotting to attack Egypt's police force and military.

The court in the Nile Delta province of Sharqiya had recommended the death sentence for the men last month, and was awaiting the mufti's approval to ratify the ruling.

The mufti, the government's official interpreter of Islamic law, issues a non-binding opinion in such cases. Those convicted can appeal a ruling before the Court of Cassation, which may either uphold the verdict or order a retrial.

Hundreds of Islamists have been sentenced to death since the military toppled Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Many, including Morsi himself, have appealed. Seven have been executed. Morsi's overthrow unleashed a deadly crackdown on Islamists that killed hundreds of protesters.

Militants loyal to IS, meanwhile, have killed hundreds of police and soldiers, mostly in attacks in the Sinai Peninsula. http://ift.tt/1KqhGcU... http://ift.tt/1V3i0bQ

Donnie: Will Iraq Ever Change? Popular and Political Tide Turning Against PM's Troubled, But Vital, Reforms

Donnie: Iraqi PM Haider al-Abadi set in motion some of the most important political reforms in the country in over a decade. First they were welcomed. But now locals are turning critical – and some of the criticisms are valid.

Donnie: Several weeks have passed since Iraq's Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, announced a series of ambitious reforms. Al-Abadi's sweeping plan was intended to change the way political business was being done in Baghdad and, it seemed, reallocate resources from the political elite to help the average Iraqi on the street.

Al-Abadi's reforms were greeted with approval by thousands of Iraqis who had been demonstrating against corruption in the government and calling for better state services like power and water. This level of approval was only bolstered when the country’s highest Shiite Muslim religious authority, the Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, also backed al-Abadi's plan and called upon all Iraqis to support it.

However now that some time has passed since the reforms were announced those same demonstrators are not holding their banners supporting al-Abadi quite as high. Jokes about the Prime Minister describe him as “the anaesthetist”, implying that he managed to calm the protesters down but has yet to achieve anything real. Other banners say the protesters plan to “withdraw the authorization” they gave him. http://ift.tt/1VAFbXD... http://ift.tt/1V3hZES
