Donnie: London (CNN)Much has been written about the young men and women who join the Islamic State. We are familiar with their biographies and pathways, backgrounds and motivations. But virtually nothing is known about those who quit: the "defectors" who didn't like what they saw, abandoned their comrades and fled the Islamic State.
Yet their stories could be key to stopping the flow of foreign fighters, countering the group's propaganda and exposing its lies and hypocrisy. For a short paper, I collected all published stories about people who have left the Islamic State and spoken about their defection.
I discovered a total of 58 -- a sizable number but probably only a fraction of those who are disillusioned or ready to leave. ISIS chief's former slave says he beat her ISIS chief's former slave says he beat her 04:17 They are a new and growing phenomenon.
Of the 58 cases, nearly two thirds of the defections took place in the year 2015. One third happened during the summer months alone. The defectors' experiences are diverse.
Not everyone has become a fervent supporter of liberal democracy. Some may, in fact, have committed crimes. They were all, at some point, enthusiastic supporters of the most violent and viciously totalitarian organization of our age. Yet they are now its worst enemies.

Donnie: With fight against the Islamic State in Iraq stalled, U.S. looks to Syria for gains
Donnie: With the offensive to reclaim territory from the Islamic State largely stalled in Iraq, the Obama administration is laying plans for a more aggressive military campaign in Syria, where U.S.-backed Kurdish forces have made surprising gains in recent months.
The effort, which would begin by increasing pressure on the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa, marks an important shift in an administration strategy that for most of the past year has prioritized defeating the militant group in Iraq and viewed Syria as a place where there were few real prospects for battlefield success.
The White House’s top national security officials met last week and will convene again in the next few days to discuss ways to capitalize on recent and unexpected gains made by Syrian irregular forces.
The administration is considering providing arms and ammunition to a wider array of rebel groups in Syria and relaxing vetting standards, effectively deepening America’s involvement in the ongoing civil war.

Donnie: Defectors: ISIS is killing Muslims, not protecting them
Donnie: London (CNN)Much has been written about the young men and women who join the Islamic State. We are familiar with their biographies and pathways, backgrounds and motivations. But virtually nothing is known about those who quit: the "defectors" who didn't like what they saw, abandoned their comrades and fled the Islamic State.
Yet their stories could be key to stopping the flow of foreign fighters, countering the group's propaganda and exposing its lies and hypocrisy. For a short paper, I collected all published stories about people who have left the Islamic State and spoken about their defection.
I discovered a total of 58 -- a sizable number but probably only a fraction of those who are disillusioned or ready to leave. ISIS chief's former slave says he beat her ISIS chief's former slave says he beat her 04:17 They are a new and growing phenomenon.
Of the 58 cases, nearly two thirds of the defections took place in the year 2015. One third happened during the summer months alone. The defectors' experiences are diverse.
Not everyone has become a fervent supporter of liberal democracy. Some may, in fact, have committed crimes. They were all, at some point, enthusiastic supporters of the most violent and viciously totalitarian organization of our age. Yet they are now its worst enemies.

Donnie: Two months after Iran reached a nuclear deal that will open its markets to the world, officials are warning of economic stagnation as consumers hold off on purchases of domestic goods while they wait for international brands to arrive.
From cars to fridges and televisions, shoppers are excited at the prospect of more choice and competition that should force Iranian manufacturers to lower prices and improve quality.
The deal with world powers in July will likely see banking and other sanctions lifted in 2016, making it easier for foreigners to partner with Iranian firms or export to Iran.
Since the deal, Iranian manufacturers have seen growth in sales prices fall far behind inflation, central bank data show, while officials and analysts describe a slowdown in consumer spending and warehouses filling with unsold goods.
"The subsequent rush of Western businesses to enter the Iranian market informed Iranian consumers that soon there will be alternative supplies of consumer goods priced more competitively and with a substantially higher quality and post-sale services," said Mehrdad Emadi, an economist at the Betamatrix consultancy in London.
