chattels: For Iraq ever to be at peace with itself after the end of the Islamic State, it will require reconciliation on a number of levels, especially within the Sunni community.
That minority fell from power after the United States-led invasion in 2003 and has witnessed its own decimation, with millions of its followers now displaced from their homes as fighting between government forces and ISIS rages across Sunni-dominated areas.
The last time this happened, in 2006 and 2007, it took American money and influence to pacify Sunni areas then in the grip of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the forerunner of the Islamic State.
With the so-called Sunni Awakening, former insurgents were paid to switch sides and ally with the government. That required a measure of reconciliation, if not forgiveness, within the Sunni community. This time, most everyone agrees, will be different.
Without the United States as a mediator, or its money to buy loyalty, score-settling and revenge are likely to rule the day.

chattels: ISIS fighting back in northern Fallujah
chattels: Iraqi forces have control of around fifty percent of Fallujah and fighting is ongoing in the northern part of the town, according to a Rudaw reporter. The Iraqi army is locked in fierce battles with Islamic State militants in the northern part of the city, said Rudaw’s correspondent at the scene, Bahman Hassan. About half of the city, the southern side, has been reclaimed from the group but the northern half is still held by ISIS, he estimated.
chattels: "ISIS has bombed the majority of the streets and alleys of Fallujah but the Iraqi counter-terror forces were able to clear the Fallujah Hospital and the Iraqi army cleared the industrial neighborhood of the militants,"
chattels: Another army commander inside Fallujah was more optimistic about the army’s progress, telling Rudaw that the Iraqi army's missions were successfully accomplished in Fallujah.
chattels: "Iraqi forces have now liberated 70 percent of the city," claimed Saadi.

chattels: Friday, June 17, 2016 8 Year Anniversary Of Musings On Iraq I got interested in Iraq completely by chance. On 9/11 I was watching TV when former CIA chief James Woolsey got interviewed on TV and said that the U.S. needed to attack Iraq even if it wasn’t involved in the assaults on New York City and Washington D.C.
I thought that was an odd comment since everyone had already seemed to agree that Al Qaeda was responsible. As 2001 turned into 2002 there were more and more calls for the U.S. to invade Iraq and that got me interested in why people in Washington were pushing this idea.
I was an early opponent of the war believing that Iraq was thoroughly contained by sanctions and two no fly zones. Looking at how Afghanistan went I was also worried that the U.S. lacked the knowledge, resources, and will to deal with post-war Iraq.
I started reading about Iraq every day and posting on message boards. I later started writing essays about what I thought was going on. Finally in 2008 I decided to start a blog. This was a time when most American and Iraqi blogs were disappearing either because they believed the war was coming to an end after the Surge or were migrating to Facebook.
Today I am one of the only Iraq blogs left. As the years have passed its gotten harder to keep up with all my research and writing while working as a teacher and having a family, but I’m still trying to write at least 4 articles a week. I’d like to thank all my readers, and especially all those that have shared their wisdom about Iraq with me either via conversations or interviews.
