Now, as 2015 comes to a close the Iraqi military, along with various militias banded together under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), are making some slow headway against ISIS in Iraq’s Anbar province where they soon hope to completely retake the provincial capital Ramadi.
 
The Peshmerga are still holding the line (a ferocious three-pronged ISIS attack last week on their front-lines was a stark reminder of how unpredictable ISIS is as well how capable it still is of lashing out at its enemies) and retook Shingal from ISIS last month. Barzani has said he is ready to contribute Peshmerga forces to assist any future Iraqi attempt to pry Mosul from ISIS’s grip.
 
chattels: n light of these developments it appears that Barzani is once again preparing to call for a referendum. Given his consistent insistence that a referendum be forestalled until the threat by ISIS is eliminated this indicates that major steps may indeed be underway to destroy ISIS.
 
Senior members within his Kurdistan Democratic Party have reportedly been instructed this week to talk with other parties within the Kurdistan Region about holding such a referendum.
 
Preparations may soon be underway about how to conduct such a referendum and what feelers should be put out to neighbouring countries in anticipation of an independent Kurdistan Region nation-state becoming a reality in the not-too-distant future.
